This week, we’d like to help a 25 year old man called Jerry, who has cared for his mum since he was 10 years old.
Jerry is autistic and has a learning disability, and he and his mum were living in squalid conditions. She passed away unexpectedly last December and Jerry has been on his own ever since. He was nominated by a charity support worker who said: “Since his mother passed away, he has been left to fend for himself in the most horrendous living conditions. He had no heating or hot water from January until June.”
Jerry was never given the chance to learn how to look after himself, but he now has a brilliant team of support around him who believe he is more than capable of living independently. He is being supported by a social worker, housing officer and a charity worker to move into a one bedroom flat in the next few weeks. Unfortunately, nearly everything from his current home will need to be thrown away so he is starting from scratch.
Jerry works part-time and his social worker is helping him to access some benefits he might be entitled to. But in the meantime, he has very little.
Jerry has been through a lot and we’d like to do something kind for him. We’d like to get him set up in his new flat so he can start his new life with everything he needs.
