This week, we’d like to something special for 200 women who deserve some kindness this Mother’s Day.
Many of these women are living in single rooms with their children, with shared bathrooms and no proper cooking facilities…never knowing when they will be asked to move on. Some are even sofa-surfing with their children, with no permanent place to live.
Our friends at the Magpie Project charity in Newham are trying to plan some activities and gifts to show these women how appreciated they are – and to let them know that we see how much they sacrifice to make sure their children have what they need, and we think they're amazing.
Jane, who founded the Magpie Project, said. “Can you imagine mothering with nothing? Nurturing your children when you don't know where the next meal is coming from? Staying awake at night so that the ants or mice don't run over them in their sleep, camping on the floor so they can have the only bed in the home? This is not happening in another country, or in another time. This is happening now.”
“Mums who use the Magpie Project are making these deep sacrifices every day. It is almost impossible, exhausting, soul-destroying - but they do it because they are mothers and that is what mothers do.”
We believe these incredible mums deserve something just for them - something to let them know that they are not alone.
One woman who received a gift last Mother’s Day from the charity said: “This is the only gift I have got for Mother's Day. My baby is too young to give me one right now, but I am so grateful to the Magpie Project for showing us so much love.”
We’ve set up a wishlist with some gifts for the mums, and will use any donations you make to fund other things they need. We would also love lots of kind cards and messages that will be given to them at the Mother’s Day events run by The Magpie Project.
